Could anyone id this plant, I was told it's a Lily for aquarium or pond but nothing else

It's water lettuce, Pistia stratiotes.

 i was told it's a Lily  :( and when I've read up on it its best kept in a pond which luckly i have  :)

A lot of people do use in fish tanks. The main drawback is it doesn't like condensation dripping on it. Neither does Amazon frogbit or Salvinia. The other two commonly recommended floating plants, duckweed and water sprite, don't suffer from this.

i read some more and yes discovered it is used in tanks like you say.
I'd already taken the glass lid off the tank even through the bloke said it would be ok in there :o
I'll look into the plants you've recommend (thanks for that :))

There are couple of stem plants that can be allowed to float as well. Hornwort is one, though it does tend to drop old leaves like a Christmas tree drops needles. The other is Brazilian pennywort.
I have water sprite in my main tank. I used to have hornwort weighted down as well, but it grew so fast the stems got so long that they strangled the water sprite. So I got rid of it a bit at a time. I also have a bit of pennywort. I bought that for my betta's tank but it wasn't at all happy in there. I moved it into my main tank and now that the hornwort has gone, it is thriving.

I have this thriving in my fluval tank with hood on,  it was bought as dwarf water lettuce?
I am becoming a little obsessed with buying plant's lol :rotfl:

It might well be a form of water lettuce because it doesn't look quite right for frogbit, just a bit more like frogbit than the usual photos of water lettuce   :)
